The pickups were probably stock Dearmonds and sounded like them (the vintage ones were better than the current ones). I bought too many guitars close together and a few stayed in their shipping boxes for a while before I got to them. I think I only got to play it a couple of times. I think I found the Kustom on G Base from a USA dealer about 6 years ago but most of my collection had to be sold. I found a good deal on a custom shop non reverse Firebird with those features in Inverness Green, so I got that as the new prices on Gibson Custom Shop Firebirds has really gone up and caused the used prices on the rarer colors to climb. I wanted for the longest time to get a Gibson Firebird VII with a Lyre in Heather Poly. Those are the only photos of aged Heather Poly that I have seen and I think you were the poster when I saw them. There was another guitar that I bought last year mostly for the finish but I have no photos handy. I bought the guitar mostly for the finish and it was also in excellent condition.

The photo showing the back of the neck shows the original colour coming through the top coat, and I stuck an authentic 60s cherry in there for comparison.Ĭlick to expand.I think I found the Kustom on G Base from a USA dealer about 6 years ago but most of my collection had to be sold. This is it - it's very hard to photograph as the shade of copper changes a lot depending on the ambient light. One of my favourites of my own guitars is a '65 ES330 that had a rather average previous refinish, and last year I decided to have it redone in heather poly by - it came out beautifully. Here are the only two convincingly authentic 60s heathers I've been able to find images of, an SG Custom and a non Reverse Firebird:

It was originally a metallic light purple colour, sprayed in acrylic with a nitro top coat, but as soon as the top coat started to yellow they ended up gold or copper. Ok then, my favourite rare finish is Gibson's Heather Poly, offered on the Custom Colour chart that accompanied the Firebird launch but extraordinarily rare. I've never seen one in the flesh but if I ever stumble on one when I'm in the US and it played well I'd have a hard time not taking it home. I've always been curious about those Kustoms, particularly in the finish you posted.
